This book addresses the major generators of conflict and toleration at shared holy places in Palestine and Israel. Examining the religious, political and legal issues, the authors show how the holy sites have been a focus of both conflict and cooperation between different communities.
Bringing together the views of a diverse group of experts on the region, Holy Places in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict provides a new and multifaceted approach to holy places, giving an in-depth analysis of relevant issues. Themes covered include legal regulation of holy places; nationalization and reproduction of holy space; sharing and contesting holy places; identity politics; and popular legends of holy sites. Chapters cover in detail how recognition and authorization of a new site come about; the influence of religious belief versus political ideology on the designation of holy places; the centrality of such areas to the surrounding political developments; and how historical background and culture affect the perception of a holy site and relations between conflicting groups.
This new approach to the study of holy places and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has great significance for a variety of disciplines, and will be of great interest in the fields of law, politics, religious studies, anthropology and sociology.

Very High Quality and Indispensable Academic Work for Israel-Palestinian Confilct
By Taro MURAKAMI
I have had a big interest since I was a high-school student in the status of Jerusalem and the conflict between Israel and Palestine, so I eagerly decided to order the present book. Its content is of extremely high academic quality and well-balanced between Jewish approach writers and Arabic approach writers, both of who demonstrate very objective discussions. The book presents how holy places around the world have been protected, and in my view this analysis must contribute to a future resolution of the conflict of the Middle East. As every article treats specific Jewish/Arabic notions, I, a Japanese, needed to read it very carefully. To understand it well, I think I have to read it twice and more and study this subject by myself. For international lawyers, I believe it is indispensable to read "Introduction" by the three editors in order to understand the current situation of the Middle East. I especially have a peaceful feeling on the article by Leonard Hammer who insists on Human Rights approach and importance of roles of NGOs. Lastly, the bibliography (English, Hebrew and Arabic) which is in the end of the book will be very useful for further study on this matter. I am very satisfied to have got the present book. I will use it during the full of my life of study.
