About the Author

Lola Cohen has taught acting for over twenty years at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute and NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Acting Program. As an actor she made her film debut in Renaldo and Clara in 1975, directed by Bob Dylan. She was SUNY - Ulster Artist in Residence in 2009.

This is an excellent book (I'm not affiliated with the author)

I'm a seasoned veteran actor. I've been acting for 25 years and after having studied all the other methods for years each one (Meisner (William Esper in NY), Adler (Stella Adler LA), Improvisation (Groundlings and Second City), Straberg (Strasberg Institute LA), Micheal Chehkov) I have very happily renewed my vows to the Strasberg Method.

My reasoning is as follows:

1. Strasberg Method is all about working from your past. You first experience something, ex. shooting with a gun, and then re-create it through the senses on-stage. Other techniques, such as the Adler technique, will make you go to the imagination and imagine what a gun would feel like and then go on-stage. The fact is, YOUR MEMORY WILL ALWAYS BE STRONGER THAN YOUR IMAGINATION, giving it an additional layer of reality.

2. The most amount of Oscar winners in history have been Strasberg trained or believe in Affective Memory. This is a clear fact and should speak for itself.

c. Ellen Burstyn 1
d. Anne Bancroft 1
e. Daniel Day-Lewis 3
f. Tom Hanks 2
g. Meryl Streep 3 (She studied at Yale when Bobby Lewis was there and in his book "Advice to the Players" he wrote about Sense Memory and Affective Memory)
etc. etc.

3. To me personally, there is nothing better than to watch a Strasberg person on Film/TV. This is of course an opinion, however it is clearly true to me. Every time I see someone that I really like, I will go on imdb and/or Wikipedia and find out that they are Strasberg trained.

This book was refreshing in many ways. I know Lorrie and Diane Hull from LA and Lorrie's book (Strasberg's Method) is considered by many to be "the bible" on Strasberg. Lorrie is not only a PhD in Education but served as Lee Strasberg's right hand assistant and teacher for 20 years. Her book is invaluable. It is almost a manual stating every step of the Strasberg Method.

However, Lola Cohen's book, to me, completes the circle. She closes many of the gaps that are present in Hull's book. For example, there is no real mention (in Hull's book) on how to actually speak your lines. She will give you tips on memorizing, etc. but not on how to deliver your lines.

All in all, I highly recommend Lola's book to anyone interested in Strasberg's Method or acting for that matter. And, by the way, I have never met her nor am I affiliated with her in any way (unfortunately for me since I would love to not only meet her but to study with her).

Not only for actors

Though not an actor, I was drawn to this book because I knew Lee Strasberg. This book is an important contribution to the arts in general. It is like being in a class with a true master who understood what it takes to become a true artist. This is the man, after all, who nurtured some of the greatest actors that ever lived. The book is so well organized, the never-before-seen photos are wondrous and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm recommending it to friends who are screenwriters, directors and even visual artists. The Lee Strasberg Notes insures that a new generation will have access to his phenomenal teachings.

wrong kindle book

This book is suppose to be the kindle version of the Nationalism of Japan by Brian McVeigh, instead this other book shows up and it has nothing to do with the book I just mentioned. I tried returning the kindle book but since I rented it I am stuck with the wrong book. I had to order the actual hard copy of the book and now I have to wait to get it.

• the intensified vitalizing level  - gaining access to feeling itself for children with chronic dissociation, despairing apathy or 'undrawn' autism.

The book offers a structured schema drawing on and updating some of her classic work. It is designed to help the therapist to find the right level of interpretation in work with clients and, provides particular help with the unreachable child. It will be of use to Psychotherapists, Psychoanalysts, Clinical and Educational Psychologists, Child Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Special needs teachers and carers of disturbed children.

Anne Alvarez is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and is retired Co-Chair for The Autism Service at the Tavistock Clinic, London. She is currently a visiting teacher and lecturer for the Tavistock Clinic, and a Lecturer on the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Society Child Programme.

This is really a great book if you are an experienced psychoanalyst of any school of thought. It begins with the Klein-Bion perspective and adds more ideas of how to interpret primitive mental states in patients. Would highly recommend no matter what school of thought you have been taught. It probably can not be understood well for someone looking for a self help book and even for psychologists that have not studied about psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

While the price may be high, the essays collected in this casebook are indispensable for anyone interested at all in tackling McDonagh criticism. It is THE source for serious McDonagh discussion that goes beyond the dismissals by other critics. Rankin merely organized and wrote the preface for it. Definitely worth reading if you can get your hands on a copy. I personally read mine through inter-library loan and would highly recommend others doing the same.

Ninety six dollars for some English prof's take on McDonagh's works? On Kindle? You've got to be fookin' kiddin', as one of McDonagh's characters would put it!
