About the Author

Barbara Stevens Sullivan is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Oakland, California and a training analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, where she is on the teaching faculty.  She has previously written Psychotherapy Grounded in the Feminine Principle (Chiron, 1989) and two novels.

The Real Deal - engaging and useful

If you are serious about analytic psychology, read on. and, Don't stop until you have finished Barbara Sullivan's book. As a traditionally trained psychiatrist with 35 years experience, there are a handful of books I invite advanced trainees to read. This book has been added to the list. Here's why: The works of Jung and Bion can for most therapists remain engaging but confusing. This book lays both a clinical and theoretical foundation for these groundbreaking thinkers. It encourages the readers to make the ideas their own and to apply them in the service of their patients. The book has the right balance of clinical examples to engage anyone who embraces therapy as an exploration rather than a quick fix. I have read the book, discussed it with colleagues, applied it in my practice and most important, deepened the process of the therapy in which my patients and I participate.

A "Must Read" in the Jungian literature

I chose this book as I was experiencing more than a mystery of psychic energy, but an uncomfortable edge of what seemed to be 'psychic fog'. I didn't go for analysis but I did read a lot of books and was certainly interested in the Jungian works. This book opened a wide field of interest that eventually led me to the rich material of Bion, Kohut, Kalsched, and on to Buddha and mindfulness, and finally the rise of brain research and neuro-science. Sullivan stresses that relatedness is the basis for emotional health but also exposes one to being wounded. The book is rich in Jungian related information; clearly written with well defined chapters. Sullivan displayed her emotional vulnerability and courage. A must read for Jungian readers who may not be able to afford an analyst or who may never have found an emotionally "honest" analyst.

This multidisciplinary book - covering geopolitics, international relations, political economy and human geography - argues that the concept ‘limits to integration’ has its roots in geopolitical reasoning; it examines how Russian regional actors have adapted to the challenges of simultaneous internal and external integration, and what kind of strategies they have developed in order to meet the pressures coming across the border and from the federal centre. It analyses the reconstitution of Northwest Russia as an economic, social and political space, and the role cross-border interaction has had in this process. The book illustrates how a comparative regional perspective offers insights into the EU-Russia relationship: even if geopolitics sets certain constraints to co-operation, and market processes have led to conflict in cross-border interaction, several actors have been able to take initiative and create space for increasing cross-border integration in the conditions of Russia’s internal reconstitution.

Elizabeth Harris’ work focuses on a particular period of Buddhist history in Sri Lanka and is a useful window into the dialogue between West and East that has seen the influence of Western colonialism and missionary activity on traditional Buddhist practice and the influence in turn of Buddhism on the contemporary West. The book describes the influence of Buddhist Theosophists, particularly Colonel Olcott and Madame Blavatsky, and there is an interesting chapter on Allan Bennett. Elizabeth Harris is Secretary for Inter Faith Relations for the Methodist Church in Britain, and her book is particularly strong is in understanding the reactions of Christian missionaries to Buddhism and the distorting lens through which they interpreted Buddhist teaching and practice. Theravada Buddhism and the British Encounter is primarily a work for those pursuing academic study rather than a text for practitioners, but it makes a useful contribution to the history of modern Buddhism.

About the Author

Patricia Kennett is a Reader in Comparative Policy Studies and Head of the Centre for Urban Studies in the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol, UK. She has undertaken substantial research and published widely on issues relating to housing and home ownership, homelessness and social exclusion, citizenship and the welfare state in comparative perspective.

Chan Kam Wah is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Sciences, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He mainly teaches social policy and housing policy. His major research interests are gender studies, housing studies, and social welfare and social policy analysis. Recent publications include: ‘Deconstructing the Asian Welfare Model: social equality matters’ in Journal of Asian Public Policy 1(3) 2008, The Crisis of Welfare in East Asia (Lexington, 2007, co-ed), Gender and Social Work – Theory and Practice (Chinese University Press, 2006, in Chinese, co-ed).
