Arguably, the absence of a relationship of mutual risk between putative combatants poses a fundamental challenge to the status of war as something morally distinguishable from other forms of violence, and it also undermines the professional virtue of the warrior as a courageous risk-taker.

This book considers the use of armed drones in the light of ethical principles that are intended to guard against unjust increases in the incidence and lethality of armed conflict. The evidence and arguments presented indicate that, in some respects, the use of armed drones is to be welcomed as an ethically superior mode of warfare. Over time, however, their continued and increased use is likely to generate more challenges than solutions, and perhaps do more harm than good.

This book will be of much interest to students of the ethics of war, airpower, counter-terrorism, strategic studies and security studies in general.

Excellent read on Just War Theory and Drone Warfare!

An easy to read and comprehensive book on the core questions of just war theory and it's relationship to drone warfare and it's application in fighting a just war in an advancing technological age and in a changed theatre of warfare in today's globally connected society. A very thoughtful book of varying and alternative ethical perspectives on the concerns, advantages, shortcomings, and evolution of warfare and the use of drones from an ethical and practical view. Book also covers possible future and current concerns on the intention and possible application of partial (1st to 3rd level autonomy) and fully (4th level autonomy) autonomous drones in future warfare. By far the best and most encompassing book on ethics (just war theory) and drone warfare.

This is the best book on the ethics of drone warfare. The author covers a great amount of information in such a short book. He gives ample information on the distinctive aspects of drone warfare, provides just war principles to drone warfare, and examines how virtue ethics applies to drones. The book is filled with examples from contemporary politics, and it also has a chapter devoted to fully autonomy drones.

About the Author

Jörg Matschullat graduated as Geologist (B.Sc.) from the Technical University of Clausthal, received his Masters Degree (Dipl. Geol.) from the University of Tübingen, and Dr. rer. nat. in geology and geochemistry from the University of Göttingen. He performed Post-Doctorates at the universities of Clausthal and Heidelberg, Germany. As of 1999, Jörg is full professor of geochemistry and geoecology at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, Director of its Interdisciplinary Environmental Research Centre (IÖZ), and Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, Geoengineering and Mining of TU Bergakademie Freiberg. his areas of interest are: atmospheric and climate science, environmental geochemistry and earth system science.

Eleonora Deschamps graduated as Chemical Engineer (B.Sc.) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and received an Engineering Degree (Dipl.-Ing./M.Sc.) from the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. She received her Doctoral Degree (PhD) in metallurgic engineering from the College of Engineering at UFMG. Today, Eleonora is professor at the FUMEC University Center of Environmental Engineering, and works as manager of the Division for Industrial Solid Waste at the FEAM Department for Industrial processes and Environmental Analysis, Belo Horizonte. Her areas of competence are: ore treatment, environmental geochemistry, controlled waste disposal, licencing and control of mining activities and chemical industry.

About the Author

Professor Mark Lawson is professor of construction systems at the University of Surrey, and consultant to the Steel Construction Institute (SCI). He is a chartered civil and structural engineer and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). His BSc (Eng) is from Imperial College, and his PhD was obtained from the University of Sanford in the field of stressed skin design of steel-framed buildings. In 2011, he was awarded two prizes by the Institution of Civil Engineers for published papers, including the Howard Medal. He has been involved in many EU projects in the steel construction sector and has led major projects on sustainable design in steel and on modular construction systems.

Professor Ray Ogden has a degree in architecture and a PhD in mechanical engineering. He has been involved in construction-related research and teaching since 1986, including work related to light steel, off-site, and modular construction, building envelope design, and low-carbon solutions. He is currently a professor and associate dean of research and knowledge exchange in the Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment at Oxford Brookes University, where he is also director of the Tata Centre for the Building Envelope. He has authored seven books and numerous technical papers and reports, and been responsible for a wide range of research and live demonstration projects.

Dr. Chris Goodier is a senior lecturer in the School of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University, having worked previously for BRE and Laing Civil Engineering. He is a chartered builder with 20 years’ experience in all aspects of construction, including research, contracting, and consultancy, and has published more than 130 papers, books, reports, and articles. He recently chaired the 2013 British Council’s International Conference on Sustainable Construction and leads a significant ongoing portfolio of government- and industry-funded research in the areas of concrete materials, off-site technology, sustainability, infrastructure, renewable energy, and construction futures.

Hershock is Coordinator of the Asian Studies Development Program at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i.  His research interests focus on the philosophical dimensions of Chan Buddhism and on using the resources of Buddhist thought and practice to address contemporary issues.  He is the author of several books and articles on Buddhist Philosophy and Chinese Religion and Philosophy.
