They introduce the field in a prologue entitled “How to Study Cities” that offers guidance on where to find courses on cities within universities, on the differing views students will encounter across disciplines, on the utility of theory versus applied research and practical knowledge, on the varied methods used to study cities, and on the field’s key organizations and journals. The authors guide the reader through the volume by offering introductory essays for each major section and short introductions to each selection. The section introductions raise larger questions students need to bear in mind, and also link current discussions to historical issues. Together these introductions act as a sort of connective tissue for the volume as a whole, pointing out recurrent themes and helping us to see current problems in historical context." - Elizabeth J. Terrible for a classroom setting.

Horrible if you're using this for a classroom environment, one of the worst ebooks I've had the misfortune of using.

The short list of problems with this edition:
-The table of contents only lists parts and not individual papers
-The page numbers are completely out of sync with the physical version of the fifth edition
-For whatever reason trying to find individual readings and papers with the search function is fruitless
-The editor's introduction of each reading is not separated from the reading itself by any change in font or even a space. It just flips from the editor's introduction to the reading itself without any indication and you have to look for clues to see where, like citations that are after the publication of the reading itself.

This is on top of all of the traditional hurdles you have to overcome when using a kindle version of a textbook (which I'm used to.) If you're getting for a class, just save yourself some trouble and grab the physical edition.

I would not rent this book on Kindle. The Table of Contents is unavailable. It is hard to find chapters and selections without it? Essential to a reader when you have to read the book in a non- linear manner. The page numbers do not coincide with printed edition thus it cannot be used for citing for academic writing. Also there is a clear distinction of the editor writing on the text and article chosen for each section. In the printed text there is a clear distinction between in fonts to show this differentiation. This is poorly laid for rental purposes. Stay away from renting this book for the classroom. better off buying a used version!

Needed this for a class. Was definitely interesting reads for the chapters we had to read. Any planner student should take a chance and look into this book (even at your library if they have it) Great planner book.

This new book redresses the neglect of this major statesmen and financier partly through the natural advance of historical research, and partly by the discoveries of missing archival material. McKenna's role is now illuminated by his own reflections, and by the correspondence of friends and colleagues, including Asquith, Churchill, Keynes, Baldwin, Bonar Law, MacDonald, and Chamberlain. McKenna's presence at the hub of political life in the first half of the century is now clear: in the radical Liberal governments of 1905–16, where he acted as a lightning conductor for the party; during the war, where he served as the Prime Minister's deputy and the principal voice for restraint in the conduct of the war; and as chairman of the world's largest bank, where until his death in office aged eighty, he prompted progressive policies to deal with the issues of war debt, trade, mass unemployment, and the return to gold.

About the Author

Richard S. Cohen is Associate Professor of South Asian Religious Literatures at the University of California, San Diego. This is his first book, though he has published numerous articles in such venues as the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and History of Religions. He is now working on a study of Buddhism and counterculture.

Not worth the time

This book has some interesting dimensions but seems to get a little lost in a tangle of overextended academic theories and a tendency to grossly overstate points.

The author makes the valid point that we must be careful about applying our concepts of what is "Buddhist" retroactively onto far removed times, places and people. But for all of his sensitivities to such things, he is strangely overdeterministic at times. For instance, he hypostatizes that because the Zen "rhetoric of immediacy" has been "enlisted in nativist, nationalist, militarist and sectarian purposes," anyone whose value system has been "informed" by Zen Buddhism is "an unwitting tool of medieval Japanese media-moguls just as certainly as the kid who thinks that he is merely obeying his thirst when he buys a Sprite." Uh, really? Does he not consider that some people simply happen to find a rhetoric of immediacy useful in their lives (and others happen to genuinely enjoy Sprite)?

This tendency to overstate points riddles the whole book. To give another example, he quarrels with the idea that the Ajanta caves should be construed as primarily Buddhist (or Bauddha, as he prefers) because Hindus utilized them for other purposed in the 19th century. Taking it a bit far, I would say.

Cohen says that he finds the Dalai Lama's assertion "there is every reason to appreciate and respect all forms of spiritual practice" to be "no less disturbing" than Tom Delay's statement to a group of Christian supremacists that "only Christianity offers a comprehensive worldview that covers all areas of life and though, every aspect of creation. Only Christianity offers a way to live in response to the realities that we find in this world--only Christianity." Really, he finds equivalence there? I understand his underlying point, but once again he way overstates it.

Cohen does do a good job comparing the claims of both Goenka and Richard Hayes to have distilled "what the Buddha really" taught, skewering their presumptions rather delightfully. But no sooner has Cohen finished this chapter than he obnoxiously proposes his own (rather incoherent) new and improved moral philosophy in the last chapter of the book. Thanks, but no thanks.

needed a Copernican revolution on the "standard order " issue

Drees' chapter 5, "Mystery in an intelligible world" has a section :"Pan-experientialist naturalism" pp. 91,92,
His opening sentence to the section is ,"There is a 'standard order' from lower to higher among the major sciences.....physics- chemistry-biology-neurosciences-psychology". He says "physics offers..the most basic view of reality" and "atoms have no sentience" and "sentience [arises] at higher levels [i.e. after evolution has produced atoms which Drees tells us have "no sentience".]

Drees notes that Whitehead's "actual entities" have some "freedom,sentience and subjectivity" and that these are "among the basic ingredients at the most fundamental ontological level". Note that Dress correctly recognizes by his use of "ontological level" that his "standard order" is a philosophical postion. It is not science.

Dress gives the reader no awareness that as early as 1905 Whitehead was sceptical of the adequacy of a materialistic, mechanistic ontology for understanding physics. From about 1912 - 1922 he developed a philosophy of science that recognizes that for both quantum mechanics and relativity (the two revolutions in 20th century physics)it is very plausible to treat events (quanta of organized energy) and not chunks of dead matter as the actual entities in the universe.

By 1925 (in "Science and thr Modern World") Whitehead is ready to use the hypothetico-experimental method of science to hypothesize that for both atoms and human experience organismic events are the most fundamental units of reality.

When this scheme is further developed in "Process and Reality" one is able to offer a solution to the mind/body problem, and the wave/particle issue in physics. Wave and particle are abstractions from more concrete events involving electromagnetic phenomena. The notions of society of events and societies of societies are useful in recognizing that mind and body ( or mind and matter) are also abstractions. Whitehead's "Fallacy of Misplaced Concretenes" is a useful device for recognizing situations in which abstractions are treated as if they were fundamental ontological entities.

Drees ends his section with : "..not considering it likely that understanding is improved by turning the [standard order] upside down, I will not consider such a modified naturalism in the remainder of this chapter.". Recall Drees' standard order is a philosophical speculation and not even acepted science. If Drees had been alive at the time of Copernicus and then Galileo would his advice have been, "Forget Copernicus. His view "turns the accepted order upside down". Stick with the earth-centered view which is the view of the majority ."

His vast oeuvre has investigated its historical, sociological and theoretical preconditions, has explored its relevance and meaning as well as diagnosing its on-going crises. In the contemporary climate, a systematic look at Habermas’ lifelong project of rescuing the modern public sphere seems an urgent task.

This study reconstructs major developments in Habermas’ thinking about the public sphere, and is a contribution to the current vigorous debate over its plight. It marshals the significance of Habermas’ lifetime of work on this topic to illuminate what is at stake in a contemporary interest in rescuing an embattled modern public sphere.

Habermas’ project of rescuing the neglected potentials of Enlightenment legacies has been deeply controversial. For many, it is too lacking in radical commitments to warrant its claim to a contemporary place within a critical theory tradition. Against this developing consensus, Pauline Johnson describes Habermas’ project as one that is still informed by utopian energies, even though his own construction of emancipatory hopes itself proves to be too narrow and one-sided.
