This book investigates the role of women and labour activism in Asia, demonstrating that women have been active in union and non union based campaigns throughout the region. Although focusing primarily on women, the contributions to this book address issues that affect all workers. Chapters on China, India, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bangladesh examine the part that female labour activism has played inside, and outside, formal union movements. Whilst documenting the peculiar factors characterising individual national contexts, the book emphasises the similarities in women’s experiences of union and labour activism and the barriers women labour activists have faced. It considers the relationships between women union members and activists and male officials and union members, links with other social movements – particularly the broader women’s movement – and the details of specific labour campaigns and struggles.  In doing so, it provides a full account of the role of women in union activism in Asia, covering all the major economies of the region, and successfully challenging the prevailing conception of Asian women workers as passive and uninterested in industrial issues.

Kaye Broadbent is currently based is in the Department of Industrial Relations at Griffith University, Australia. Her research interests include the impact of gender on work and industrial relations and gender and unions in a comparative context. Her publications include Women’s Employment in Japan: The Experience of Part-time Workers (2003), also published by Routledge.
 
Michele Ford chairs the Department of Indonesian Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her research focuses on the Indonesian labour movement, labour migration in Southeast Asia and women and work. She is co-editor, with Lyn Parker, of the edited collection Women and Work in Indonesia.

D. N. Panigrahi was formerly Visiting Professor, Jamia Millia University, New Delhi. He has been Professor of History with NCERT, New Delhi, Director, Parliament Research Service, Parliament House, New DSelhi, and a lecturer at the University of Delhi. He has a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and has published six books, including India’s Partition: the Story of Imperialism in Retreat (2004) and G. B. Pant: a Profile in Courage (1988).

The jurisprudence is divided between those cases concerning the human rights implications of explicitly transitional policies (such as lustration), and those that involve impacts upon specific democratic rights during the transition. The book presents a close examination of claims by states that transitional policies and priorities require a level of deference from the Strasbourg institutions. About the Author

Dr James A. Sweeney is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Durham University, UK. He is also Deputy Director of Durham Global Security Institute. Dr Sweeney has acted as an expert advisor to the Council of Europe in relation to freedom of assembly projects in Armenia, Azerbaijan (with the Venice Commission), Georgia, and Kosovo. In March 2011 he delivered human rights legal training to judges of the Ukrainian Supreme Court as part of a UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office project. Throughout 2009 he acted as an expert advisor to the EU's Committee of the Regions as it prepared its Opinion on reforms to the Common European Asylum System. His work on the human rights of failed asylum seekers has been cited by both the UK House of Lords (in its former judicial capacity) and the Court of Appeal.

About the Author

Miriam Meyerhoff has taught sociolinguistics in places as diverse as New Zealand, Hawai'i, the mainland United States, Vanuatu and Scotland. She has consulted on sociolinguistic issues for the print and broadcast media and published books and articles on language variation, language and gender, and language contact. She is currently Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

The Kindle Version did not properly format the text correctly ...

The Kindle Version did not properly format the text correctly. Whenever there is a text box regarding a side note (usually at the bottom or top of the page), Kindle would insert it improperly between the text (especially between sentences), causing much confusion when reading the text. The actual text includes formatting (such as text box borders) that is not available on the Kindle version. If I learned anything, it's to never buy a textbook for Kindle. Get an actual PDF or physical copy.

but I did not enjoy this text

Perhaps my rating is due to the fact that this was the main course text for my doctoral sociolinguistics class, but I did not enjoy this text. This would be a good introductory text for an undergrad or masters course, but certainly not for phd level work. One positive: it is highly skimmable.

About the Author

Jon Pierre is Professor in Political Science at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and adjunct professor at University of Pittsburgh. He held a Chair in Politics at the University of Strathclyde between 1996 and 1999 and has held visiting scholarships or professorships in Hong Kong, Canberra, Montevideo and Nuffield College. In 2006, the Swedish Science Council awarded him a "long-term support for leading scholars". He is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of twenty books including (ed) Debating Governance (Oxford University Press), Governance, Politics and the State (with B. Guy Peters, Palgrave, 2000), Handbook of Public Administration (Sage, 2003) and Handbook of Public Policy (Sage, 2006 (both co-edited with B. Guy Peters). He has published more than 70 chapters in edited volumes and 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals, mainly in the field of public administration and urban politics. He is a former editor of Governance and serves on eight journal editorial boards.

Jean-Michel Eymeri-Douzans is Professor of Political Science at the interdisciplinary Institute of Political Studies (IEP) of Toulouse (south-west of France, second French city as regards the academia and number of students). In Toulouse, he has several managerial and research responsibilities: he is director of the research centre of the Institute, the Laboratory of the Social Sciences of Polity (LaSSP), director of the Master "Consultancy-Expertise-Public Action", chairman of the permanent Academic Recruitment Board of the Institute, member of the Board of Governors, of the Scientific Council, of the Council of the Doctoral School, etc.

Wright aims to address the lack of any substantial and sustained engagement between critical realism and theological critical realism with particular regard to: (a) the distinctive ontological claims of Christianity; (b) their epistemic warrant and intellectual legitimacy; and (c) scrutiny of the primary source of the ontological claims of Christianity, namely the historical figure of Jesus of Nazareth. As such, it functions as a prolegomena to a much needed wider debate, guided by the under-labouring services of critical realism, between Christianity and various other religious and secular worldviews. This important new text will help stimulate a debate that has yet to get out of first gear.

This book will appeal to academics, graduate and post-graduate students especially, but also Christian clergy, ministers and informed laity, and members of the general public concerned with the nature of religion and its place in contemporary society.
