About the Author

Bernard Harris is Professor of the History of Social Policy at the University of Southampton (UK). He has published a wide range of articles on different aspects of the social history of health and welfare and is the author of The origins of the British welfare state: social welfare in England and Wales 1800-1945 (Basingstoke: Palgrave, 2004).

Paul Bridgen is Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Southampton. He has published a range of articles on different aspects of twentieth-century British public policy and is the coeditor (with Traute Meyer and Barbara RiedemÃ¼ller) of Private pensions versus social inclusion? A case in point is the role played by Vladimir Solov’ev. One of Russia’s most celebrated moral philosophers, his defence of the ‘right to a dignified existence’ and his brilliant critique of the death penalty not only contributed to the development of a legal consciousness during his lifetime, but also inspired appeals for a more humane system of justice in post-Soviet debate. This book addresses the issues involved and their origins in late Imperial legal thought. More specifically, it examines competing theories of crime and the criminal, together with various prescriptions for punishment respecting personal inviolability. Charting endeavours of the juridical community to promote legal culture through reforms and education, the book also throws light on aspects of Russian politics, society and mentality in two turbulent periods of Russian history.

About the Author

Moshe Givoni is a Senior Researcher at the Transport Studies Unit (TSU) which is part of the School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) at Oxford University. He is also a Research Fellow at Wolfson College. Before joining Oxford he was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Department of Spatial Economics, Free University Amsterdam. He gained his PhD at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London and his academic background also includes degrees in Economics and Geography (BA) and Business Administration (MBA) from Tel-Aviv University.

David Banister is Professor of Transport Studies at the University of Oxford and Director of the Transport Studies Unit. He is also currently Director of the Environmental Change Institute in the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford. Until 2006, he was Professor of Transport Planning at University College London.

About the Author

Namrata Raylu has been involved in a number of research activities in the area of addictive behaviours over the last 12 years and has published in the problem gambling area. Currently, she works as a research collaborator at the Psychology Department, University of Queensland and as a clinical psychologist in private practice.

Tian Po Oei has published widely in the areas of substance, anxiety and mood disorders and processes of change in psychotherapy, especially CBT in Asian cultures. Currently, he holds a personal Chair in Clinical Psychology at the University of Queensland and is the Director of the CBT Unit at Toowong Private Hospital.

Adequate Content, Disgusting Pricing

I am a publisher, author, and intelligence professional. I was a speaker at the conference from which most of this material is derived.

I wish to respectfully inform all prospective buyers that a book like this, in lots of 2,500, costs a US penny a page to produce. I could produce this book for $34.95, with Amazon paying me $15.75, which after cost of printing and graphics would leave me with a $10 profit.

I am--to put it mildly--outraged at the disgraceful overpricing that the publishers are attaching to this book. This kind of over-pricing urges the violation of copyright and the posting of a pirated copy of this book to the web.

I earnestly hope that Amazon will get into the business of direct publishing to Kinko's and localized delivery by Federal Express, and put such dishonorable publishers completely out of business.
