Dr Nathan Hall is a senior lecturer in Criminology and Policing at the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth. About the Author

Hyam Maccoby was a Research Professor at he Centre for Jewish Studies, Univeristy of Leeds. He has published many books and articles and they include The Philosophy of the Talmud (RoutledgeCurzon, 2002) and Ritual and Morality: The Ritual Purity System and its Place in Judaism (Cambridge University Press, 1999). His research interests are Jewish-Christian relations in ancient and medieval times; The New Testament in the light of the rabbinic writings; the philosophy of the Talmud and Jewish medieval philosophy.

Brilliant and insightful.

This is a brilliant short book full of valuable insights. The main thesis is that the fundamental source of anti-semitism is the central role of Judaism in Christian mythology; in the ensuing rivarly, the demonization of the Jews, a populist theological tool to rally Christians in support of the supersessionist idea (and to assuage Christian insecurities) spread all over Europe as Christianity took hold of political power. Politico-ideological and racial anti-semitism are modifications and transmutations of the same medieval themes within the new secular age and while theological Christian anti-semitism barely avoided genocide (thanks to St. Augustine's theory of Jews as the despised "witness people"), secular-ideological antisemitism had no such constraints, which explains its lethality. Muslim antisemitism is different, as Jews don't play the same central mythical role in Islamism. However, when a previously second-class people, treated with contempt (the dhimmitude status) dared regain independence after defeating muslims, the contempt turned into ubriddled hatred, fed and stirred by all types of classical Western anti-semitic trash: from Christian blood libels, conspiratorial paranoias, racist nonsense, Nazi fantasies and, more recently, left-wing delusions.

It is a great reading, particularly the discussion of anti-semitsm in Shakespeare, Voltaire, Nietzche, Eliot and Pound. At some places the author relies a bit too seriously on psychoanalysis, an amusing pseudo-science, but pseudo-science nontheless, but fortunately this doesn't cause much harm overall.

Highly recommended.

This book describes how three of the most significant Anglophone writers of the first half of the twentieth century – Yeats, Eliot, and Woolf – wrestled with a geopolitical situation in which national boundaries had come to seem increasingly permeable at the same time as war among (and within) individual nation-states had come to seem virtually inescapable. Drawing on Jean-François Lyotard's analysis of the elements of performativity in J.L. Austin's speech act theory, and making critical use of Carl Schmitt’s writings on sovereignty and world order, Miller situates the writings of Yeats, Eliot, and Woolf in the context of what Lyotard describes as a "civil war of language." By virtue of its dissolution of any clear boundary between "interiority" and "exteriority," as well as by virtue of its resistance to any decisive form of resolution or regulation, this "civil war of language" takes on dimensions that are ultimately global in scope.

Miller examines the emergence of modernism as bound up with a crisis of personal, political, and aesthetic sovereignty that undermined traditional distinctions between the public and private. In the process, he directly engages with the theoretical discourse surrounding the geopolitical impact of globalization and biopolitics: a discourse that is central to the influential and widely-debated work of such varied figures as Carl Schmitt, Hardt and Negri, Giorgio Agamben, and Jean-Luc Nancy. This book will be of interest to anyone concerned not only with twentieth-century literature but also with questions of nationalism and globalization.

A fascinating account of a psychoanalysis with a schizophrenic young woman where art is a primary method of their work together.
The text is much too long and at times, boring in the detail. However, for its time, it is a classic and well worth the time to read and discuss with other clinicians. It lends itself well to a Study Group discussion.

What a pity!

What a pity for the competent writers of this very expensive book, that is a disgrace for the publisher! I feel really obliged to warn the interested reader. Most of the illustrations are horrible, very clumsy and totally unworthy of a book with a scientific purpose. I do not exaggerate: even a child of ten doodles better!

About the Author

Jolle Demmers obtained her PhD in 1999 at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. In 1999, she co-founded the Centre for Conflict Studies (CCS), an interdisciplinary research and training centre at the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University, where she currently holds the position of Associate Professor.
