The recent use of drones in the War on Terror has demonstrated the power of this technology to transcend time and space, but there has been relatively little debate in the United States and elsewhere over the embrace of what might be regarded as politically desirable and yet morally worrisome: risk-free killing. Arguably, the absence of a relationship of mutual risk between putative combatants poses a fundamental challenge to the status of war as something morally distinguishable from other forms of violence, and it also undermines the professional virtue of the warrior as a courageous risk-taker.
This book considers the use of armed drones in the light of ethical principles that are intended to guard against unjust increases in the incidence and lethality of armed conflict. The evidence and arguments presented indicate that, in some respects, the use of armed drones is to be welcomed as an ethically superior mode of warfare. Over time, however, their continued and increased use is likely to generate more challenges than solutions, and perhaps do more harm than good.
This book will be of much interest to students of the ethics of war, airpower, counter-terrorism, strategic studies and security studies in general.

Excellent read on Just War Theory and Drone Warfare!

An easy to read and comprehensive book on the core questions of just war theory and it's relationship to drone warfare and it's application in fighting a just war in an advancing technological age and in a changed theatre of warfare in today's globally connected society. A very thoughtful book of varying and alternative ethical perspectives on the concerns, advantages, shortcomings, and evolution of warfare and the use of drones from an ethical and practical view. Book also covers possible future and current concerns on the intention and possible application of partial (1st to 3rd level autonomy) and fully (4th level autonomy) autonomous drones in future warfare. By far the best and most encompassing book on ethics (just war theory) and drone warfare.

This is the best book on the ethics of drone warfare. The author covers a great amount of information in such a short book. He gives ample information on the distinctive aspects of drone warfare, provides just war principles to drone warfare, and examines how virtue ethics applies to drones. The book is filled with examples from contemporary politics, and it also has a chapter devoted to fully autonomy drones.
