About the Author
Ludmila Stern is Senior Lecturer in the School of Modern Language Studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia, where she coordinates Russian Studies, and Interpreting and Translation Studies. She has published on VOKS and French intellectuals, and her other research interests include courtroom interpreting (Australian War Crimes Prosecutions and ICTY).

An unusual find

In my youth, there was a lot of talk about "les trahisons des clercs." The period from 1911 or so, with the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, the deposition of the Chinese emperor and the early Balkan Wars, to 1953 or so, with the cessation of hot-war hostilities in the Korean Peninsula and the death of Stalin, can be seen as a Forty Years' War. It was the greatest war the world has yet seen. Ludmila Stern has opened one small window onto the so-called "interwar" period -- a Eurocentric term -- by publishing her research on how the Soviet Union exploited the greed, gullibility and lust for power of "public" intellectuals in the west in the period from 1920 to 1940.
This is an academic work, heavily footnoted with the findings of her research, which she did in original Soviet archives. Here is the surprise: it is not a dull read. It is intelligently and even engagingly written. It will not fail to hold the interest of readers who are interested in the time period, in the Soviet regime, in cultural espionage or in the careers of the many prominent literary figures involved.
Does anyone still want to answer the question of how soi-disant intellectuals can turn traitor to their professed ideals? For them, this book is highly recommended.
