About the Author
John Dourley is Professor Emeritus, Department of Religion, at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He graduated as a Jungian analyst from the Zurich/Kusnacht Institute in 1980 and has published widely on Jung and religion. His most recent books include Paul Tillich, Carl Jung, and the Recovery of Religion (Routledge, 2008).

Eliminating religion as a justification for violence

Dourley makes a strong case that from the psychological perspective of Carl Jung, all experiences of divinities, gods, goddesses, and indeed, "God," are moments/events WITHIN the psyche of individual humans, with no way for us to know about anything "supernatural." In this religious situation, all religions and faiths have equal standing as products of the same archetypal ebulliance of the unconscious. Jung's (and Dourley's) thrust is that if more and more people would come to understand and accept this perspective, much of the animosity and violence between religious/faith communities would dissipate.
This is not an easy read; Dourley is an academic writer, but one does not have to be a religious studies specialist to understand his arguments. I was left feeling that his knowledge of Carl Jung is comprehensive and that he has focused on Jung's religious dimensions perhaps better than any other analyst/academic.
