Catarina Kinnvall is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, Lund University, Sweden. Her research interests include international relations theory and political psychology, focusing on globalization and religious nationalism in Asia. Her recent publications include Globalization and Democratization in Asia: The Construction of Identity (with Kristina Jönsson, eds).

The author analyses the rise of Hindu and Sikh nationalisms in India. Where powerful forces strive to promote such ideas. In part as a means of affirming or reinforcing an identity amongst potential supporters. However, unlike many African nations, India has largely remained at peace internally.
The added twist in this book, if it may be phrased as such, is how Kinnvall ties this into the recent rise of globalisation. Specifically, into the Indian disapora in the developed nations. In such places as the US, Indian sub-identities tend to be deprecated. But some Sikhs have used a promotion of Sikhism globally as a means of tying into their ethnic members overseas. In no small part, the latter are a rich source of funding.
She also finds that some Hindu nationalists are doing likewise. Reaching out overseas under a rubric of Hindu Rashtra. The comparison between the Sikhs and Hindus involved in such activities is well done. Offering a different angle into some consequences of India moving further into the world economy.
But the book should not be seen as alarmist. Only a relative few, in India and outside, are active in the movements looked at here.
